“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not” Dr Seuss

Medical Imaging is located across 3 sites, and our committee is made up of members from every craft group. We are working towards more sustainable healthcare, challenging the legacy protocols and building a culture to encourage ideas, and to support the smallest changes can have the biggest impacts.

Sustainability wins

  • endorsed the use of reusable tourniquets

  • changed the biopsy procedure packs to save $15 per procedure and a lot of waste

  • changed the dsa pack into vascular and “other” to minimise the wastage of additional items packaging and the waste of unused products

  • supported the change of single use splash protection to individual goggles

Current issues and ideas

  • implementing an organic waste composting system; ideally to a community garden space or the like

  • creating competitions between sites (MID spans 3 sites or areas) to see who can recycle the most paper or plastics

  • looking into a PVC and soft plastics recycling program

  • looking into a medication discarding system to remove the need to put in sink nor sharps bins

  • continually working to change the culture and approach to recycling and sustainability

Current activities

Goals

  • the way we throw our waste away: now divided into plastics paper glass

  • educating our department through talking and posters on bins (no one reads emails)

  • changing the culture of the team to be more sustainable

  • developing a tea room that doesn’t support single use cutlery or crockery

Activity in medical imaging

  • sourcing reusable sterile gowns that can be laundered on site

  • looking into a medication discarding system to remove the need to put in sink nor sharps bins
